Ming Wang (Wirren · Perlen)

What a great joy it is that we still can find beautiful moments and inner peace through music – moments that in a turbulent world appear like precious pearls bathed in soft light. This is how quotations from the Gymnopédies by Erik Satie (French composer, 1866–1935) turn up unexpectedly in this composition: fragile memories of peace, clarity and timeless simplicity. We live simultaneously in an age of deep confusion. Wars, a pandemic, environmental catastrophe, global crises and political unrest characterize our present day. These conditions are reflected in the music – in painful note clusters, sharp, abrasive dissonances and at times overpowering musical gestures.
A structured scaffolding of chords lies at the heart of this composition. Hidden in the background, it holds together the consciously stage-managed confusion and lends the apparent chaos an inner order, where the pearls of silence and holding back can reveal themselves.
