In this remarkably inventive work, the composer subjects the melody to a series of intervallic expansions and contractions within several diVerent tonal, and sometimes microtonal, contexts that broadly correspond to the work’s various sections. A trail of melodic clues may be traced though these sections, culminating in a quotation of the hymn tune itself towards the end.
