Whilst browsing through the art collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, I was struck by the title of Paul Klee’s painting Beschwingte Bindungen, which the Museum has translated as Winged Links. This title, which I have adopted for the the String Quartet, serves to disclose the thematic behaviour and compositional method at work within the piece.
Except for the title, Klee’s painting did not influence the piece in any way, unlike the book Point and Line to Plane by Wassily Kandinsky. The tension within a point, the resonances surrounding a point, the directions of tension within lines, the weight of accumulated tension – all are examples of ideas important to this composition.
