Charles Dieupart

Three Harpsichord Suites from Manuscript Sources

Charles Dieupart (?before 1667-c.1740) was born in Paris, the son of a candlemaker. Nothing is known about his life before he settled in England in 1703 or slightly earlier, except that he appears to have taught harpsichord to the Countess of Sandwich in Paris around 1700. In England Dieupart was a respected violinist and harpsichordist, celebrated for his performances of Corelli on the violin. He performed at both the Drury Lane and Haymarket theatres in London, and put on concerts with musicians such as the violinist and keyboard player William Babel (c.1690-1723) and the cellist Nicola Haym (1678-1729).
