At the turn of the year is a revised version (2016) of a set of four short piano studies sketched mostly between December 1991 and January 1992. Originally written at the request of Michael Young for his pupils at Wells Cathedral School and offered as a 60th-birthday present to the Liverpool poet and painter Adrian Henri, it was first performed in 1993 and recorded in 1998. The work is in four sections, all derived from the opening material; the first and fourth are similar, and the middle sections, newly reworked and expanded, are fast and scherzo-like in character.
